I learned something very valuable. Typing a kind sentiment in an e-mail before presenting unadulterated facts humbles a reader. Have you had this moment? You walk into the office and boot-up before getting your vice. You have e-mails from COB the previous day until the morning of the present day. You click on an e-mail that sets you off because the sender is trying to play CYA and in the process kicks you completely under the bus. You hit <Reply All> with vengeance. Before making bullet points of specific details to counter their false claim, in the first sentence write: “I thank you for your opinion and would very much like to work with you to address your concerns. However, if I may, I would like to shed light on specifics, as I believe there has been a miscommunication…” This will help reduce your frustration. And then hammer the facts with bullet points and evidence! :0) (Don’t forget to highlight their misrepresentation in bold and italics :0). After you hit <SEND>, get your vice and take a walk around the building to calm your nerves before heading back to your desk. :0) LOL! Chances are you will receive a very humble e-mail response or a visitor at your desk. Now, it’s very important to keep everyone in the chain completely informed, so don’t forget to forward updates to everyone! :0) LOL!
